What Is BananaBird?

BananaBird is a personal finance tracking tool designed to help you understand your financial position over time.

The application focuses on long-term financial tracking rather than short-term budgeting. By periodically recording balances, income, expenses, and financial flows, you can build a clear picture of where you stand, where you have been, and where your finances are heading.

BananaBird aims to find a practical middle ground between recording and categorizing every transaction and only looking closely at your finances when a major decision or life event occurs.

This is not...

  • Not a transaction-level budgeting app – BananaBird is not designed to record and categorize every purchase or manage day-to-day spending.
  • Not a bank-integrated platform – There are no automatic connections to financial institutions or automatic syncing of Account balances and transactions.
  • Not focused on short-term activity – The application is designed primarily around periodic review, longer-term trends, and your overall financial position.
  • Not a “set it and forget it” tool – You are responsible for entering your financial data, and that periodic engagement is intentional.
  • Not formal accounting software – BananaBird does not require transaction-level reconciliation or a complete accounting record of where every dollar came from and went.

Key Features

  • Track Accounts, Assets, Liabilities, Income, and Expenses
  • Monitor Net Worth and other financial trends over time
  • Record Contributions and Withdrawals between Snapshots
  • Build a historical record through periodic Snapshots
  • Review your financial position through dashboards, charts, and summaries
  • Track investment Accounts and portfolio-level trends

How It Works

BananaBird organizes financial information using a few simple concepts:

  • Snapshots – Periodic financial check-ins that record where things stand at a point in time
  • Accounts – Bank accounts, investment accounts, debts, and other financial balances
  • Assets – Physical or non-account assets such as property or vehicles
  • Income – Sources of income and amounts received between Snapshots
  • Expenses – Recurring or manually recorded expenses tracked separately from Snapshots
  • Contributions & Withdrawals – Financial movement into and out of Accounts between Snapshots

On a schedule that works for you — weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or otherwise — create a Snapshot and review your current financial information. A short, intentional review can help you understand where things stand, what has changed, and whether anything deserves a closer look.

Design Philosophy

BananaBird is built around a simple idea: financial health starts with visibility and understanding.

The goal is to provide meaningful long-term financial insight without requiring transaction-level tracking, formal reconciliation, or constant maintenance.

Manual engagement is intentional, your data remains under your control, and additional complexity should only be introduced when the value justifies the effort.

BananaBird is designed to help surface useful information and trends while leaving financial decisions, goals, and priorities in your hands.
